As one of my favorite poets, I’d be remiss not to honor Maya Angelou as her voice fell silent yesterday. She was an inspiration on countless fronts, but most importantly, her commitment to civil justice and peaceful leadership helped to change generations past, and generations to come.
Two of my all time favorite poems, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings and Phenomenal Women, are pieces that I read often, not just for literary inspiration but for when I need some encouragement. She stood for strength, kindness, being happy despite the worst circumstances, and leading by demonstration.
Quotes from her work are staples in my life and the lives of many across the globe – she’s been my pick-me-up when I need a little reminder on a refreshing way to look at the world. Below are a few of my favorites.
