Mood: In a denim daydream. The photos certainly speak for themselves. But because you can’t read where my mind was at in this moment, let me paint a picture for you.
Within 15 minutes we had parked the car, forked over change for tickets, loaded our luggage onto a cart, and seated ourselves on a massive ship that would soon deliver us to Mackinac Island. The city girl in me was still in awe over the ease of it all when the captain gave a welcome over the speakers, and soon all I could hear was the wind and waves crashing. Doug and I sat there, not really saying much, just smiling. At one another, passerbys, the water, and the tiny island on the horizon that slowly became bigger and bigger. I didn’t care that my hair became increasingly tangled. It smelled like fresh air.
The man who helped us with our luggage referred to this place as “God’s country.” He told us about living in the city himself. A veteran of Chicago for 20 years, and moved to upper Michigan to enjoy the area and slower days. Especially when the sun’s rays had visible lines and danced around the sparkle of the water, I could see why.
And so there I sat. A born-and-raised-Michigander, who had moved away to the city for a decade, but came back to “God’s Country” and found, in this moment, a reconnection. A peaceful feeling that, though we miss Chicago, we made the right decision. Because though you can cruise on the water there too, it’s just a little bit different when your surroundings don’t include a skyscraper in sight.

While in my little daydream, I was appropriately wearing one of my favorite go-to style uniforms of all time. A relaxed cotton button down, paired with a lace black bra for just a little bit of edge, with distressed Levi’s skinny jeans. Topped off with a Detroit Tigers baseball cap, a new wardrobe addition that I love. And my Everlane modern loafers. I was comfortable and feeling great.
