My Honest Interior Define Review & Why I’m A Believer In Customization
Note: Our Ms. Chesterfield Couch and Caitlin chairs were gifted by Interior Define. However, all opinions are my own. This review was done on my own accord and not in partnership with them. As always, I am extremely picky about the products I recommend here – anything I recommend is something I truly use and personally attest to!
Today’s post is a highly requested one. Especially after sharing our living room reveal, so many of you messaged asking about our couch and chairs. You wanted to know if we recommend them, how well they’re made, and what it was like ordering through Interior Define. So without further ado, I’m excited to provide a full Interior Define review for you today!
Here’s the thing about shopping for furniture, especially highly-trafficked pieces like couches or chairs. Purchase decisions come with a lot of pressure. As focal points of a room, they need to be aesthetically pleasing. They’re pieces where people lounge and play and sit and live, so they need to be comfortable. If you are like me and have two toddlers who love to color on any object other than paper, the pieces also need to be practical. See what I mean? < Cue David Bowie’s “Under Pressure” tune here. >
Add on the endless options found online, and it’s hard to narrow down what the right choice is for your home. The thought of “Customization” took that pressure even further because, to me, a fully tailored-to-me piece was cool but also intimidating. What if I picked something that didn’t look good? That felt off? What if I didn’t like the end result?
But, what if buying something like a customized sofa or chairs was as comfortable as lounging them?
A novel idea, right?! It’s one that Interior Define promised, and one that I can honestly say they delivered on absolutely seamlessly. I thought it’d be helpful to put together my honest Interior Define review, because in choosing our pieces, I found other reviews so helpful for me! This post is all about the process I went through in deciding on our pieces, what I liked, how the end result came to fruition, and key notes for if you’re considering buying their pieces too.
Why Interior Define?
This is important to note because there are simply so many choices online, no? How do you know what’s the right one for you? (Especially for big items like a couch!)
My answer: Go with the retailer that has a look and feel you admire. Leaning into this route will lead you to pieces that you will naturally fall in love with in your home, because they will no doubt deliver on the vibe you want to convey. You know what I’m talking about, right? Restoration Hardware has a vibe. Pieces that you see and think, “Ah, yes. That’s so Restoration.” So does West Elm. Target. Anthropologie. Interior Define has one too.
I first gravitated toward Interior Define because of their modern, minimalist aesthetic. (Fun fact: I actually discovered them when reading a fellow blogger’s Interior Define review!) I saw a trend happening with me. Images I’d save online for decor inspiration and reference commonly had their furniture front and center. After years of admiring their pieces, I decided that this was the one.
Interior Define Review: The Exact Details Of Our Furniture

Style Selection – Ms. Chesterfield Sofa
- Fabric – Sapphire Mod Velvet
- Legs – Oiled Walnut Tapered Turned Wood Legs
- Size – 74″
Style Selection – Caitlin By The Everygirl

Customization: I’m Now A Believer
As I said before, I was a bit intimidated by “customization”. It felt like so much pressure, I’d never done customized furniture before, and before going through it, I’d probably tell you I wasn’t interested due to said intimidation and the fear of messing it all up. I was that person who’d go to a store, browse the floor, and order based off what I visually saw and confirmed in front of me. (Ohh how you live and learn!)
However, I’m now a full-on believer in customization when done right, because I’ve seen the amazing difference it makes in how pieces come to life in a room. Actually, it’s more than that. They bring a room to life.
Unlike my assumptions, I actually found the Interior Define process to be somewhat fool proof, because they were presented in a way where I could see and visualize exactly what I was going to get. (Unlike many retailers where you see a floor sample, and as you customize and order fabrics and details, the end result is often a guessing game.)
Here’s what I loved specifically about the Interior Define customization process.
All Your Customization Options Are Laid Out Seamlessly
Once you choose a style and you’re on the product page, the customization options are easy and seamlessly listed on the product page. You pick your fabric, legs, and size of the piece. In some furniture items, there’s further customization options such as how many seat cushions you’d like and the cushion fill you prefer. It’s all right there, easily laid out, so you can visually see exactly what your choices are and all the options you could put together for your item.
As You Customize, The Visuals Update
As you pick and choose fabrics, colors and materials you’re interested in, the product image updates with your choices so that you’re looking at the latest visual representation of your item. This makes it super easy to visualize exactly what you’re putting together, and to play around with all your options.
They tell you what fabric options are kid and pet friendly
This was huge for us because, quite frankly, we have no idea what fabrics are better than others for families. I love that I could browse fabric options by which ones are kid and pet friendly. Both the couch and our chairs are made of fabrics that resist piling, snagging and other wear, which is huge for us because #ToddlerLife.
Free Fabric Swatches
Unsure of the fabric or color? Need to see your options in person. They’ll send you free fabric swatches. It’s always nice to see things in person if you’re unsure!
Design Tools & Resources That Are Helpful
As someone who is a very visual person, and who also loves to share and chat things through, I appreciate how many resources that Interior Define made available in the shopping process. Here are a few that I found particularly helpful in making our decisions.
Style Guides
If you’re not sure where to start, there’s a style comfort guide to help showcase suggestions based on what you prefer. For our couch, we were all about the playful vibe — something that made a statement but that was also comfortable enough to lounge around on. For our chairs, we went a classic route — “forever” pieces that we could easily mix and match in different rooms down the road.
Augmented Reality App
THIS WAS SO COOL. I downloaded the Interior Define app, which has the ability to showcase the piece of furniture you’re looking at in your actual home. We basically had a blank canvas because our living room was totally empty before we got our furniture, so it was really fun to play around with this app! It definitely helped us to figure out what pieces would look best together.
“In Real Life”
On the product pages, Interior Define showcases your piece in real life. Real, user-taken photos where you can see how different spaces and customizations were brought to life. This was perhaps the biggest deciding factor in choosing a sapphire blue couch! I don’t know if I would have chosen that color if I’d flown solo on that decision, but seeing this couch in other people’s homes and loving every one of them made me say, “YES. This is exactly what I want.”
How’s The Quality?
You know that “100” emoji that everyone uses when it’s, like, a perfect score? Imagine that here.
We’ve had our couch and chairs for about 4 months now, and they’re basically brand new, despite this being the most highly trafficked room in the house and also the place where Grace and Jo jump around on the regular. These pieces are well made, the fabrics are durable, and I’ve found them easy to clean thus far.
The one caveat I wish I would have considered a bit more is ordering white chairs with two toddlers in the mix. I particularly regretted that color choice when Josephine decided to take a bright blue marker and color on the side of one. (I about lost my mind!) BUT, what made me choose the white despite having kids is that it was labeled under the “Kid and pet friendly” fabric options, so I was banking on the chairs being fairly easy to clean. And guess what? The marker stain easily washed out, and my white chairs are looking pretty darn good still. So, there! 100 emoji.
Alright, be honest, what’s the catch?
Alright, so, obviously from this Interior Define review, you know I’m a huge fan. I, hands down, have never had furniture pieces that we’ve gotten so many compliments on and that I love so much. I’m proud of them; they’ve truly made our living room.
There is one thing to consider, however. Because each piece is made for you, the wait time takes longer than if you purchased at a big box retailer who has boxes and boxes of one item in their warehouses. So definitely go into this knowing that it’ll take some time. (For us it was 12 weeks, I believe!) I will say that I was so eager to get our furniture and it was hard to wait that long, but once we got our items, they were absolutely worth the wait! And I love knowing that our pieces were, literally, crafted just for us.
I hope this Interior Define review was helpful for you, especially if you’re on the hunt for some new furniture! What questions do you have about the process? What of their pieces do you like best? Would love to hear in the comments below!

Hello, Now that you’ve had the furniture from Interior Define for almost a year, how are you liking your pieces? Are they still in good shape?
I can’t speak highly enough about them, especially the couch! All pieces have held up amazingly, especially with kids who are very tough on them. I will say that the white chairs can be a challenge to keep clean (especially with toddler hands on them all the time), but the good news is that they’re pretty easy to clean in general. Just takes a little more effort than chairs that aren’t white. Definitely would still recommend! Hope that’s helpful 🙂
Just curious what seat cushion selection use choose? I really like the idea of the reversible down but am worried they will be a pain to fluff up all the time. Thank you!
I believe we got the Standard Down Blend! We do need to fluff it periodically but not so much that it’s a nuisance. Hope that helps!
How to you clean your mod velvet? I just ordered a couch but am now panicking about how to clean jam marks off the errant child’s fingers. Can I use scotch guard?
We actually find the velvet fabric to be very easy to keep clean! (What we’ve run into is issues with our white chairs, though.) I just spot clean stains with a damp cloth and it works fine. In terms of regular maintenance, we do vacuum the couch regularly! I’ll probably get it professionally cleaned soon, and maintain that on a regular basis moving forward.
I am seriously considering purchasing a Ms Cherterfield sectional, but I’m concerned about how comfortable it will be for lounging and movie watching for hours.
If it helps, you can use my family as your focus group of 5! Our couch is the main place we watch all TV shows and movies. We find it very comfortable! Gracie even loves to have her nap time on it. One note is that we have some added throw pillows, which definitely helps amp up the comfort!
Thanks for the review, so helpful! Would you mind telling me where you found your ottoman? Thank you!
Absolutely! It’s from Pottery Barn. Here’s the link: https://bit.ly/3ia6skX
Do you know if they sell replacement cushions? I found a chair that I love (The Maxwell). But, I’m afraid the cushions are going to looked smooshed and worn over time. Some of the picture on the website look a little wrinkly.
Hey Julie! I’m so sorry, I don’t know that answer! I have definitely found their customer service team to be super helpful and informative — let me know what you find out!
How do you clean your white chairs with the marker issue you mentioned??
We used an upholstery cleaner! The marker was washable, so it came off pretty easily.
Hey Emily, I’ve been seriously considering purchasing a sofa, but I’ve read some not so great reviews. Can you help ease my mind a bit by letting me know what options I have if when I receive the sofa I’m not satisfied with the quality/craftsmanship?
Hey Kara! Ah, I’d love to help, but I’m not an expert on these options on behalf of the brand! I think reaching out to their team to get clarity may be the best best for getting the answers you need. I can tell you that we love our couch and chairs, and they continue to hold up really well! I do hope that helps in your decision. 🙂 Best of luck!
Hi Emily! Great article. Can you let me know if the sofa back and seat is very stiff / firm? Has the sofa become softer over time. I am afraid the sofa is too firm because of the tuft design. Thanks so much.
Hey Dan! Thanks so much and I’m happy it was helpful for you. Yes – the sofa back on its own is pretty firm! Transparently, I wouldn’t be comfortable laying on it without pillows. That said — with the pillows — it’s great! Hope that’s able to help.
Isn’t it impossible to not love (much less critically review) something you got for free? Like, I have to pay 2K of hard earned cash for this, how can that possibly compare to you getting it for free?
Thanks for your comment, Danielle. While I certainly understand that perspective, I have to respectfully disagree! I have provided my truthful point of view, and that’s something I stand behind, whether or not product was received for free. Transparency is something that I hold at a high regard. That said, I understand if you’d like to simply move on from this post/my perspective, and find a different outlet to get a point of view on. Wishing you well either way, and cheers to finding a furniture piece you love!
I have a couch from them, and have piling problems. Not really a problem, but definitely annoying. Have you?
Hey Samantha — Ah, shoot! Nope, I haven’t had that issue!
The woman with the company said the fabrics with natural fibers have a tendency to pill. What did you get? I’m not wanting another sofa with piling, I’ve already got one!
Our couch is the mod velvet fabric, and our chairs are the structured cloth in “Swan.” (I just checked their site and didn’t see the “Swan as an option so perhaps they changed this up?) Neither have pilled so far! I’m not sure if this will help you, but I do know that they send out free fabric samples. May be good to narrow down your options and feel/see them in person? Hope that helps!
Looking at purchasing the “Tatum” from Interior Define and was hoping you could tell if the quality of the fabric and comfort is nice? I’m very particular and like high quality items.
Hey Cheryl! Thanks so much for swinging by. I can’t speak to the Tatum, however I can tell you that my chairs and couch from Interior Define have held up very well. They are comfortable (we use them every day!), and the fabric is definitely high quality. We’ve had no issues! (Except for the white chairs getting dirtier than I’d like. However, 3 kids will do that!) I hope that helps!
hello! I am researching this couch and wonder if you could tell me what depth seats you opted for and how is it continuing to hold up?
Hi,
Does the down blend need a lot of fluffing? I am on the brink of ordering a sofa that is not tufted. I understand your tufted sofa doesn’t need much fluffing, but what about your chairs?
Any thoughts on the structure/frame of the sofa?
Also, can you refer more bloggers who have brought sofa from Interior Define, if you know someone :)?
Thanks!
I am in shock. I read your review, which differed greatly from most of this company’s reviews which I didn’t read until after I purchased 3 sofas, an Ottoman and a bench. Almost universally the reviews that I read for negative. After 6 months and several miscommunications about delivery we received our furniture a couple of weeks ago. It is beautiful and despite the norm of “neutrals” I went with wine sofas with pink piping, a pink ottoman (slightly too big), another sofa in pink. After getting over the shock of the size of the ottoman I have settled in. I had been collecting throws, lamps., and pillows for months and putting it all together with a set of heavy rose colored drapes with gold fringe. I love the room. Getting there was tough. My entire purchase was online, which I now can not believe I did. After giving away all of the furniture in the room we were notified that a mistake had been made and the delivery was off. My salesperson never followed up after taking the order, which has me questioning her commission. I lucked out and found a lovely customer service rep named Kristen who always responded promptly and with kindness.
I have no idea how this stuff will hold up. Fingers crossed. My shock comes from your review which I was so happy to read after all of the negative comments I have read. I love your couch-the color is marvelous. And I didn’t realize that you are an “influencer” so finding out that you were gifted the pieces floored me. I wish you had mentioned it upfront. I believe your review was honest and thorough but inevitably the lack of investment colored my interpretation. Enjoy your room and your family as I hope we do ours. Aside from a slight skunk smell (weird I know) all is well.
Please don’t come up on stage and slap me after receiving this.!
Ha – don’t worry, no slapping here! Thanks for your comment, Melissa. I tried to provide an objective review, and to be what I thought was clear in my partnership with the brand. (I do appreciate this feedback, and I will be updating this post to note that I was gifted product in the upfront of this post, so I hope that helps any future confusion!) The hard part about sharing personal experiences is that, well, they’re so personal! What one person thought was a great experience, another may not, and inevitably both experiences will differ as they ordered different items to different places, have different room needs and questions, etc.
I do have to say I still love my furniture items, and can attest that years later and even with 3 kids bouncing off the items, they’re holding up very well. I still also adore how they look! Overall, I would still recommend them to others. But I respect your experience as well, and hope that you are able to to find solves/exactly what you’re looking for moving forward. 🙂
Thank you for responding Emily. We’re three weeks in and really enjoying the furniture. It’s a total update and we love the two James couches and have gotten used to the larger than expected ottoman. The other couch is not as comfortable but looks great! I think I will buy a complete set of cushions for the James to have backups. We are already living on it. Willow the dog has made it her new bed so a little bit of fur. The ramification of burgundy color.
I owe you an apology. I reread my comment and it was rude.. The lead up was a bit frustrating but it has worked out well.
Best
Where did you get that gorgeous rug??
