Flower Fields In Michigan
…You pull over, stop to smell the (literal) roses, then snap a photo because holy heck it’s beautiful.
A few weekends back, our family had zero plans on a Saturday, which is a very rare occurrence for us. We decided to embrace all things fall and head to Blake Farms – which has the cutest pumpkin patch and cider mill – and on the way home we stumbled across the most amazing sight. One of the most gorgeous flower fields in Michigan that I’ve seen on the southeast side.
It was complete with bright oranges, purples, pinks and yellows.
Called Vanhoutte Farms, it quite literally came out of nowhere on our drive, so imagine my surprise when I saw it. The colors! The rows and rows of flowers! “PULL OVER DOUG THERE’S A FIELD OF FLOWERS AND I NEED TO SIT IN IT.” Weird but true. AND I just so happened to have one of my favorite floral-print dresses in the trunk due to extreme negligence to unpack after a recent trip, so that was icing on the cake. (Which, might I add, I will now effectively use as an excuse to delay unpacking in the future. 😉 )
So we pulled over, I picked a bouquet of flowers, grabbed a few photos, and afterwards just took it all in and enjoyed the setting for a few moments. I wish I could tell you it was longer, but a side note to flower fields is that there’s lots of bees, and though I tried keeping it cool there were a few moments where my voice emerged multiple frequencies higher than I was comfortable with. Definitely a situation where “You can’t sit with us!” is appropriate, no?
By the way, am I beginning to sound like Tim Allen lately with all this Pure Michigan hype, or what?
Sorry ’bout it. I just love highlighting this state! After living in the city for so long, I tend to now look at normal “Michigander” things like flower fields, changing leaves on trees, a quiet snow storm, or big blue lakes with a new lens. The seasons here are incredible. There’s so much variety. They’re the things that I grew up around and got so used to that I began to take them for granted. It took leaving, then returning, to really appreciate it all. Does that make sense?
This post is beginning to sound like a ramble, and I suppose in a way it is. But in another way, I think there’s something nice about reflecting on the surprising beauty of an unexpected situation. One in which life hands you flower fields in Michigan (or really, anywhere), and you make a bouquet. It’s kind of like life handing you lemons, you know? It’s wise to make lemonade.
Mine was colorful, a bit wild, and slightly overgrown. And it was gorgeous.
