Our home is slowly coming along.
Emphasis on “Slowly” there because I feel like we should be further ahead since we’ve officially been living here for nearly 5 months! (What the what?!) And the more it comes along, the more I’m seeing a fun and colorful boho home decor vibe come through, which we’re really loving! But, man, decorating and bringing an entire home to life is a lot of work. (And expensive!)
Side note: Check out our latest visual home tour (Part one and Part two) if you’re interested in seeing some of the rooms we’re working with.
Overall, we’re taking our time with the decor decisions for a few reasons.
- We want to make sure we’re creating a home we love. For us this means being very thoughtful about everything that goes into the rooms. It’s important for us to walk into a home that the girls feel happy in and that we all feel comfortable and at home in.
- After years and years in tiny apartments with lots of hand-me-down furniture where we really were just making things work, we’re finally able to be thoughtful and intentional about our furniture purchases and decor. I’m learning this is actually a lot of pressure, however! We don’t want to buy something and then find 5 years later that we’ve outgrown it or don’t like it anymore. So every purchase is one that we feel we are going to have for the long term.
- Furniture and decor is really expensive! Holy cow. We’ve been trying to find pieces that are relatively affordable but will last. We understand this is an area to invest in for the future, so we’re not afraid of splurging on pieces that we have to have, but we do have a strict budget so are trying to be both creative and mindful about those purchases!
- It’s important for us to have a flow from room to room. I’m trying to keep my KonMari hat tightly on with our decor choices, so we don’t end up with clutter.
- Color and personality are two things we want to harness. We definitely gravitate toward a modern bohemian vibe, mixed with a touch of minimalism. So with this in mind, we’re going slow because we’re literally analyzing very piece closely to make sure we’re choosing things that add to this vision!
I owe you full on updated room tours, which I promise are *almost* ready! But I thought in the meantime, I’d keep you updated with pictures of a few boho home decor pieces we purchased recently and are loving.
10 Boho Home Decor Items That We’re Loving
Southport Patio Egg Chair
This chair, you guys. We can’t get enough of it! It’s perfect for sipping coffee in the morning, lounging in while working or reading, and can even fit two people comfortably. It feels like you’re in a cozy little nest while you’re in it. Perfect for indoors or outdoors, and I love the wicker material.
Loloi Quinn Printed Rug
Looks like a vintage rug, but for a price that’s way more affordable. (All the actual vintage rugs I’ve found are crazy expensive! Anyone have a secret to how to get one for a price that won’t break the bank?) We have the 3×5 size, which makes for the perfect rug to go under my desk in the sunroom! I love that this rug ties in greens, blues, pinks and whites, which are all colors common in our house and especially our sunroom. This is crazy easy to clean too, which was put to the test when Grace spilled my coffee on it the other morning!
For those interested, my shoes are Dolce Vita Raffia Mules. I am obsessed, especially for the upcoming spring and summer months!
Handmade Natural Jute Fiber Rug
Bragging moment: We got this on sale from $400 to under $90.
YES that’s the real price and NO I didn’t believe this was real when I saw it. But it is real, and it’s wonderful! This rug is such a beautiful addition to our sunroom; it has a very pretty woven texture but isn’t uncomfortable like other jute rugs I’ve felt in the past. (I’ve actually sent back two because they were too rough.) Here, I’m showing how we’ve used the jute rug — next to our moroccan-inspired one. I love how they work together to create that boho home decor vibe I was noting earlier!
Fuchsia Velvet Floral Pillow + Striped Floral Pillow
I just adore how the colors in these two pillows play off each other! And I love that they tie in lots of the colors found in our sunroom. Accessories are a great way to amplify a boho home decor theme and these ones are so perfect!
I also really love this floral pillow, which I think I’m going to purchase to go on the couch next to our wicker egg chair. PS – If you’re looking for some fun, unique home accessories, I always find amazing things at this link!
Throw Blanket With Poms
Love me a cozy throw blanket! I always have one thrown over our couches or chairs, because at night I’m always a little chilly. The bright colored poms are the perfect boho home decor tie in with this!
Stacked Elephants Figure + Rapper’s Delight Print + Dinosaur Succulent Holders
I just love the playful nature of all these items. The “trunks up” on the stacked elephants means “Good luck”. Rapper’s Delight is one of our favorite songs to have weird dance parties to. And, the dinosaur succulent holders were little presents we gave to Grace and Josephine to help teach them how to care for plants. (I can’t find these dinosaurs online – gah! – but here’s a cute hedgehog and unicorn!)
White and Gold Pineapple Bookends
I love decorating with pineapples for their symbolism. Pineapples have long been a “welcome” symbol, especially in the south, and symbolize friendship, hospitality and warmth. All things we hold at a high regard in our home!
Whale Spoon Rest
Isn’t this little guy just so adorable?! I love little pops of fun personality throughout our home, and this whale is one of my favorites. He makes me smile while I cook. 😉
