Through what may be the most adorable DIY ever created, I have a big announcement to share with you. Doug & I are moving in together.
Last week my crafty man surprised me with a handmade board made with panels of wood. The wood used to be part of a barn in Lansing, where we started dating at college. Each panel has nails holding keys on them, with placeholder keys on most nails. The first nail, however, held the key to his apartment with “7/1/13 Em Moves In” on it. I just about died when he said, “This board is going to hold a key for all the houses in our future.” I mean, seriously, cuteness overload. I’m one lucky gal.
Now, readers, I’m relying on your help! What’s your best advice & words of wisdom for moving in with a guy?
PS – we’ve already started devising master plans for all the DIY furniture & decor we’re going to make. Isn’t That Charming has a lot of fun posts in its future!

Aw… Congrats! That’s very exciting news!
Such a thoughtful gift!! So sweet of Doug to make that! I can’t wait for you guys to move in. Living together is a blast, you will love it. First order of business is to figure out who gets up when and when you can have the shower! 🙂 Can’t wait to see all the DIY projects you two come up with! I still want to make those stools! xo Ana
All the best with the moving sweety, hope the packing and unpacking goes smoothly!
Yay that’s so exciting! 😉 I’m actually making a very similar announcement soon as well!
That’s so romantic! And congrats on this big step! xx

so exciting! can’t wait to see the new pad! xo
Aw, yay! Congrats to you guys!!! What a sweet little idea he came up with too–apparently your craftiness is rubbing off on him!
So exciting – congrats! My best advice…learn to work his aesthetic so that the decor speaks to both your tastes. It’s an adjustment but an awesome one. Pick and choose your battles. My husband still doesn’t put down the toliet seat!
That is sooo cute!! 🙂 Sounds like he is a total catch, you are lucky!! Congrats!!
This is so exciting for you!! My one BIG piece of advice about moving in with each other is to EXPECT some disagreements about living styes. “Compromise” is a whole new stage of being together and it’s an important one. You have to learn what is really important and what is worth letting go/not fussing over. Not saying you’re going to start fighting each other all the time or anything like that (at all!!) but just don’t expect everything to go flawlessly – expect a few bumps 🙂
His key gift is so thoughtful and sweet – lucky girl!!

My only word of advice (and this comes from experience back with the first guy I moved in with…) is to throw any expectations out the window now. There will be disagreements, there will be inconsistencies… Just have an open mind and enjoy it all without expecting it to be a certain way. And of course- congratulations!!
My advice is like the others: Let go of the little things. You think you know a guy, but then moving in is an entirely different experience. I’ve just stopped complaining about him not replacing the toilet paper on the holder (throwing a new roll on top doesn’t count), not pushing his chair in and not folding the sheets (at least he washed them). Good luck. So exciting! Enjoy!
What an adorable story!! I just started living alone after living with shitty roommates for the past two years so I have no advice. haha Best of luck!!! Though I’m sure you won’t really need it.
Make sure you have your on little bit of space! Sometimes 5 minute in my office is all I need keep sane with my husband. xx. McKenna Lou

Congratulations Emily!!! OMG he seems like the sweetest most thoughtful boyfriend!! I’m so excited for you both. Enjoy it and don’t sweat the small stuff.
congrats Emily, so exciting! i would say have very few expectations and definitely let the little things go… coming from a semi-control freak (just semi), you really have to just let stuff go… and always enjoy breakfasts together when you can 😉
This is so exciting and fun! Love how he asked and seriously, best DIY EVER!
congratulations! that is adorable! My words of wisdom are, make sure that you are equal with household expenses. And let the little things go. It will be very fun! My bf and I moved in together a few months ago and it has been wonderful 🙂

The hardest thing for me was having to sacrifice my more girly style for his more rustic one. He would prefer wood – I would prefer it be lacquered to death. Luckily we’ve been able to make compromises – we both like dark woods (so much chicer) and he lets me have fun with accessories like pillows, coffee table books, candlesticks, trays, etc. But it can be annoying! I’m still working on him about putting up wallpaper in our bathroom!
holy. crap. that’s like straight out of a rom-com. WHAT A CUTIE.
and living with a boy is toooough, haha. I just moved into a one-bedroom with my boyfriend, and we got into WWIII about decorating. The man is PARTICULAR. Like I had a woven basket and he said it was too girly and tried to stuff it into a closet, haha. Before this apartment I lived in a studio with him for about a year, and one thing I would say is choose your battles. There will be things you’ll find that will annoy you (like with any roommate), but before you start picking at them think if it’s really all that worth it. Also, train him to clean right from the beginning 😉

Thanks for your great comment on my last post! Happy Friday!
So exciting!! Congrats lady! My husband and I agree that the secrets to our happy marriage are separate bathrooms, separate closets and separate tvs (so sometimes he can play video games/ watch sports in one room while I watch Bravo in the other) 🙂
So sweet, congrats!! Boys can be messy and don’t see the logic in doing a lot of things girls do and don’t make a fuss over a lot of things girls do, lol. So, try to understand that and work together & you’ll be fine. Try and come to some happy medium in all things and give space when needed. So fun 🙂 x
Congrats honey!! Wish you all the luck in the world!!
