Can I just offer up a huge round of applause for anyone who is consistent with working out in the winter? As motivated as I was in the summer months to train for my half marathon, I’m finding that it’s hard to get out there when the weather is inching closer and closer to zero. (By the way, it dawned on me while writing this that I still owe those of you who’ve asked a breakdown of my half-marathon training! Coming soon, I promise.)
Though my frequency of working out will certainly slow with snow on the ground and without a race on the horizon, I’m determined to stay active and not get stagnant. I really love running outside and do tend to prefer that route over a gym (treadmills make me go a bit stir crazy), so as long as the weather is mildly cooperating (i.e. Not a blizzard) I’m trying my best to get out there.
There’s just one problem. I’ve been finding it far too easy to offer up excuses for myself! “It’s still dark out” in the morning, so I stay in bed. “It’s too cold out” when suiting up, so I opt not to. “I have too much work to do” while planning my day, so I don’t prioritize working out when I’m able to.
But, recently, I came across a quote that really stuck with me. I keep thinking of it whenever I find myself opting for the easy way out.
“Be stronger than your excuses.”
Let’s face it — there’s a lot of them. Nearly every situation can be an excuse if you let it. It’s hard to prioritize working out with all that’s going on, especially when the weather is less than ideal!
But keeping the fact that I need to be stronger than my excuses is so motivating to me. Especially when it’s an excuse like “It’s too cold”, because I always find that once I get out there it actually feels good. For example — on the day these photos were taken — it was a drizzly day that was on the cooler side. But my hoodie kept me perfectly warm while first getting out there, and then once I started working out, I was actually too warm and just opted for my tank and pants.
Not sure if that progression would happen with snow on the ground, but hey, it’s still a good reminder that getting out there is half the battle! Let’s chat about my athletic gear for a moment, yes? My whole outfit was gifted by the wonderful team at Fabletics. The items were actually my first introduction to the brand, and I can’t rave about them enough! The sweater has a comfy cowl neck which kept me so warm, and the fabric was heavy enough to keep me warm and yet light enough to allow for movement. The leggings are so comfortable and would be perfect for anything from running to yoga to lounging. All of these have since been worn around the house and on days when I just need something cozy to run around in. Athleisure at its best!
And for my fellow deal lovers — the hoodie I’m wearing here is on major sale — from $79 to $34! The pants are also on sale too — from $79 to $24.

Working out is my sanity hour in the morning! My husband and I take turns and the other person does daycare drop off, so I have no excuse when it’s mine!
That’s such a great idea! Love that you guys take turns — and I’m sure it makes the mornings where you have some time to yourself all the more valuable!
I actually just ran 3.2 miles outside with my co-worker at lunch. I love lifting and do it usually 4 days a week, but now my co-worker and I have started swimming one day at lunch and running another and its great for getting my cardio in and some fresh air in the winter. (swimming is definitely inside haha)

How cool that you do this with your coworker! I always find it so motivating to have a work out buddy. Definitely helps to hold me accountable!
Awesome post! I know that I will always feel more energized for the day ahead if I get my morning workout in. I try and get myself to go to bed early so that I can’t have excuses in the AM.
