Cue the confetti! Pop the champagne! {I’ll cheers your drink with water.} We’ve got some big news to share.
…We’re pregnant!
I’m beyond excited to share our happy news with you. Not only because it’s been so hard to keep it a secret, but because our excitement is growing by the day.
I’m officially in week 15 of my pregnancy, which means I’ve passed the sometimes-challenging roller coaster that was the first trimester. Our baby is due in late June, and already, I can’t believe how fast things have gone by. It was October when I took the at-home pregnancy test that turned out to be positive, and every doctors appointment has been met with smiling tears as we’ve seen our baby move via ultrasound and got to hear the little heart beat.
It’s an exciting time, and I can’t wait to share more with you in the months to come. {Speaking of sharing — I want to reassure my readers that while I’ll be letting you in on my journey, I have no intention of turning Isn’t That Charming into a “mommy blog”.} In the meantime, below are a few FAQ’s about my experience so far!
You’re pregnant! What?! How did that happen? I’m no biologist, so I’ll just leave it at this: The stork came knocking.
Waaait a minute. Didn’t you just get married? Our summer wedding certainly feels like a day removed. In the words of my doctor, “Whelp, that was a quick turnaround.” Rest assured, we’re ready and more excited than words can possibly describe.
Fabulous! How do you feel? Once weeks 13 & 14 came along, I started feeling great! But prior to that…not so much. Almost immediately after I found out, I started feeling more exhausted than I’ve ever been in my life. My days basically consisted of work, sleep and more sleep. {There was one night in particular in which I couldn’t finish cooking dinner without needing to lay down.} For me, “morning sickness” was totally backwards – nausea hit right around 6 or 7 pm and would last for hours. Every. Magical. Night.
Did anything help your nausea? Honestly, not really, with the exception of laying down, taking it easy, and drinking lots of water. My best advice for anyone going through it is to eat what you can and be patient with yourself. And get lots of rest!
Any cravings yet? I used to hate orange juice, but lately I’ve been craving big, tall glasses of it.
[Insert quick glance down at my belly] You don’t look pregnant. Gah – I know! I’ve got a mini-belly growing, but it’s not very noticeable to anyone who doesn’t know me super well. I’m still in all my normal clothes, but I’m so excited to finally graduate to maternity clothes soon. Belly bumps are the cutest and I can’t wait to have one! Every body is different, and no two pregnancies are the same, so I’m just trying to be patient, eat well and often, and whisper words of encouragement to my new little companion every day.
Are you going to find out the sex? Yes! That happens at our 20 week appointment, which is in February.
What do you think it is? A boy. But Doug’s bet is on a girl. We’ll just have to wait and find out soon!
Any names yet? We have some favorites, but that information is being kept close to the chest. In the meantime, I will say that we’re super fond of going the Gwyneth route and naming our child something like Apple. {Kidding, Mom!}
Are all these photos you’ve put in the post going into the nursery? Undecided. But, aren’t they adorable? I found them on Etsy here, here, here & here.
Nursery? Don’t you live in a one bedroom apartment? Don’t tell me the baby’s sleeping on the couch. Our couch is quite comfortable, but that little one will definitely have its own room. We just sublet our current place and in a few weeks are moving into a 2 bedroom apartment in Chicago. Quite the whirlwind, eh?
What are you reading? Here’s the thing I’ve learned about all the information that’s out there: There’s too much of it. My doctor actually told me to stop reading so much after the 5th phone call to him during a week in the beginning where I felt particularly scared and underprepared. Since then, I’ve been trying to keep my reading to experienced-based to avoid the terror that comes with the big, bad wolf that can be the internet.
That said, other bloggers have been wonderful for this! I’ve enjoyed keeping up with Maria from The Style Letters and Tegan from Treasure & Travels, who both are just about a month in front of me in their pregnancy. Emily of Cupcakes and Cashmere & Jillian of Cornflake Dreams have been other pregnancy-documenting favorites. There are also some moms out who have become recent stops on my every day reading list because I adore their parenting style & following along with their family journeys. Noteworthy picks are House of Harper, Oh Dear Drea, & Bleubird. Another other recommendations?
…So, now you know! If you’re in the mood for some Thursday celebration, pop a little champagne on our behalf today. I do miss it, after all! 😉

P.S. I also had to laugh a little bit at what your doctor said, just because I can picture some serious doc attempting to make a joke.
Thanks, Karly!

Congratulations Emily!!!! You are going to be the best little mamma and what a fun, new adventure ahead with Doug! This is an obvious suggestions – but I love Cup of Jo. I found her mom articles quite fascinating even when I was in my early 20’s – babies nowhere near the brain. Didn’t even have a boyfriend! Hope to see you soon and congrats again.
Emily!!! I could not be more excited for you and Doug!!! Sometimes the stork just comes knocking early 😉 {we were married 1.12.13 & our little angel, Avery, came 11.25.13 – some things are just meant to be}!! All my love and I’m SO excited for you to experience motherhood – it’s simply amazing.

Ahhhh congratulations to you and Doug! How exciting 🙂 Can’t wait to read more about your journey to stylish mommyhood 🙂
Sidebar, my last name is Apple, which means I’ve been getting “apple” jokes my entire life and “Gwyneth” comments for the last 10 years. And yes, little baby Apple Martin is 10 years old already.
While taking time away from the blog-o-sphere was amazing for my sanity, I can’t believe I missed this for so long!!!!! I am so so SO excited for you and I can’t wait to see your baby bump grow. P.S., even though you can’t drink, you are still HIGHLY encouraged to meet myself and Arin at Filini this winter/spring. Miss you!
