“I’ll have a salad, please.”
It was our first day in Greece, and what I was expecting to come out was much different than what did. In America, when you order a Greek salad, a bed of lettuce adorned with olives, feta, tomatoes, onions, cucumbers – and perhaps some gyro meat – arrives. What’s actually a traditional Greek salad surprised me, in a good way. It was one of the best salads I’ve ever had. So much so that I ordered a salad at nearly every meal while there, and when we returned home our authentic greek salad recipe become a staple that we eat at least once a week.
This salad is fresh, healthy, and delicious. The kind of dish that you want to keep eating, and you don’t feel an ounce of guilt about it. Trust me, you haven’t had a great Greek salad until you’ve had this authentic one.
I’m sharing the recipe with you below, so you can enjoy it, too! The best thing about this is that it’s so simple. We don’t measure things, and we don’t follow any set “rules” other than to create a dish that tastes delicious. So, you’ll note that the below recipe is probably one of the most simple you’ll find.
Authentic Greek Salad Recipe Straight From Greece
Ingredients
Salad
- Tomatoes
- Cucumbers
- Red onions
- Green Peppers
- Feta cheese
- Kalamata Olives
Dressing
- Salt
- Pepper
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- Lemon Juice
- Optional: Oregano
Directions
Cut the salad veggies into large chunks and put them all into a large bowl. Lightly toss. (We tend to mix the cheese in throughout the salad, however in Greece the cheese was serves in large chunks on top of the salad.) Now, it’s dressing time! Drizzle the Extra Virgin Olive Oil and squeeze lemon juice over top, then add in the salt, pepper and oregano. Again, toss the salad so all ingredients are evenly mixed.
For all the above, gauge the quantity based on your preferences and the number of people eating!
That’s it! An authentic greek salad recipe that’s super easy, and so delicious.
