When I was younger, I always looked at pencil skirts as “too mature” looking. They reminded me of my mom’s work clothing, which I now adore, but back in the day I just didn’t get it. I blame all this on my far-too-long “surfer girl” stage in which Abercrombie & Fitch, Hollister, and puka shell necklaces were my go-to. (Side note: Why did I think it was acceptable to dress for the beach during Michigan winters?)
Thankfully, that stage is long gone, and I can now appreciate pencil skirts for what they truly are: feminine & versatile. In fact, they’re my top pick for when the urge to dress up a little hits me. Ever since I bought this J-Crew skirt last year, it’s been one of my favorite wardrobe essentials. Check out this post & this post for other looks. As you can see, I typically wear this skirt with heels, but these booties were the perfect tie-in for cool weather.

So cute! The problem I have with all of my pencil skirts is that they’re too big at the top and don’t look nearly as chic as yours does. Ahh! Well, I love this and that blue is just gorgeous!
i know this post is about your skirt (which is gorgeous, great color!) but i LOVE the booties! xo jillian – cornflake dreams
…and then i realized they are like 4″ heels. DANNNNG …i struggle in anything higher than 2″
Pencil skirts flatter EVERYONE–they’re the miracle wardrobe piece! The cobalt hue of this one is perfect on you.
I only started enjoying pencil skirts when I found ones at Loft that actually fit my little waist! Now my world has been opened up to so many more outfit combinations. I love the color of yours!

I can totally relate, I always saw pencil skirts as old lady office wear but now I have so many in my closets including a cobalt blue one from J Crew similar to the one you featured. It’s fun to pair it with a crop top when going out for drinks.

That skirt fits you like a dream. Do you have trouble finding skirts that are slim enough around the knees? I have a terrific one from Zara but most tend to look more straight-cut on me. I persevere!
