Everyone talks about the decor of a new home (By the way, if you haven’t seen it yet, check out our home tour part I and part II for updated imagery of our house one month into living here!), but what about safety? Not always Pinterest-worthy, but absolutely essential in a living environment.
The safety of our home is a topic that’s been top of mind for Doug and I constantly lately, especially as we set up rooms and consider the fact that our kids are wild, often untamable animals darlings who get into everything.
My goal is for every room in the house to be child-proofed.
It’s nearly impossible to watch kids every second of every day…and I want to have the peace of mind knowing that, should Gracie or Jo wander into a room, they’re safe no matter the circumstances.
Of course, it’s the little things that matter most when it comes to safety. Things like every plug having a cover, shelves and dressers being secured to the wall to prevent them from tipping over, and cabinets having child safety locks on them to prevent those curious hands from getting on things like cleaning supplies.
One room that’s easy to forget that those rules apply to is the laundry room, no?
Especially since it’s not one where kiddos typically hang out. The kitchen is a given because it’s the heart of the home. A bathroom? Of course. But the laundry room? It’s kind of like the mop bucket of the house. You need it…it’s essential…but you always think, “Nooooo” every time you need to go in there.
By the way…am I the only one who CAN NEVER FOLD A FITTED SHEET?! Also what’s with every sock my kids own being a lone soldier? Where does the other one go?!
Back to safety. Laundry jokes aside, as parents we all need to be conscious of protecting the delicates that matter. (Love me some silk but I’m referring to our kids here, friends!) Which is why I’m excited to be partnering with the American Cleaning Institute to share their “Packets Up” tips for laundry room safety.
Here are some simple and easy ways that you can ensure that you are practicing safety with your detergents and packets.
PACKETS UP! TIPS
- Always store laundry packets up and out of reach
- Keep packets in their original container and store them immediately when you bring them home
- Always keep product containers securely closed before and after use
- Text “POISON” to 797979 to save the poison control contact information on your smartphone
- If your child comes in contact with laundry packets, call poison control right away.
Really, it’s all about keeping detergents up and out of reach of kids, as with any cleaning product. Accidents can happen in an instant, so it’s essential to be aware and practice safety measures! Proper storage and handling of detergent and laundry packets during use is essential in preventing accidental exposure.
As you can see from the images above, to help reiterate all of this, we have a “Packets Up” sticker on the side of our washer! If you’re interested in a free reminder cling, go to the Packets Up website to order one – parents should place it in a visible location to serve as a daily reminder to store laundry packets up and away from children.

The site also has some tools to help you prevent exposures from liquid laundry packets and detergents. Another helpful resource is to watch Through Their Eyes to understand how to keep toddlers safe by seeing the world through their perspective. Follow #PacketsUp on Facebook and Twitter to keep up to speed on the latest in laundry room safety habits.
There’s nothing more precious in life than our children. Let’s all do everything that we can to help protect them. xx

What’s with the 1 sock only coming out when you know you out 2 in?! Totally with you on that and I think I’ve finally mastered folding a fitted sheet! So good to see a post on safety around the home!
