Having a baby bump doesn’t mean you need to sacrifice on style.
This is something that I have to regularly remind myself, because while dressing the bump it’s far too easy to throw your hands up and put on leggings and an oversized sweater yet again. Which, don’t get me wrong, is such a great, go-to option! But I also do believe that dressing a bump doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice on looking fresh and taking changes. Stylish maternity outfits are not only possible, but totally doable on the daily!
Sure, there are nuances with dressing the bump, but I’ve discovered some styling hacks for maternity outfits that help to turn an outfit into “cozy-but-kind-of-blah” to head-turning “Wow you look GREAT” looks. They’re simple, easy, and guaranteed to make you feel like a MAMA instead of a mom. There’s a difference, no?! 😉
8 Hacks For Stylish Maternity Outfits That Don’t Look “Motherly”
Style Hack #1: Maternity Jeans That You Can Tuck Tops Into
Standard maternity jeans are great because they typically have a handy elastic band that you wear over the bump, keeping them in place and fitting right. I have two pairs and definitely can attest that they’re comfortable. But, they’re also nearly impossible to wear anything tucked into them, really limiting your options for styling.
I found this pair from Hatch months back, and can’t recommend them enough! They have an elastic waistband and are worn under the bump, so you can easily tuck in your maternity shirts. Gamechanger. I also love the boyfriend style, which is both laid back and fashion-forward, and looks great when worn with anything from booties (as shown below), to heels, to loafers.
Shown above are my Hatch boyfriend jeans with a jersey maternity turtleneck – another maternity option I highly recommend as it’s so easily layered and worn different ways – layered under my Sophie Open Front Sweater Blazer, which is a closet staple year round! I paired it with my brown booties (similar here + here) and wore a silk scarf over my neck for a bit of added pizzaz.
Style Hack #2: Show Off A Little Leg
Just because you’re pregnant doesn’t mean you need to divert from a little leg! Over the knee boots are on-trend pairings with dresses and skirts for the cooler months, even with a bump. They’re a sure way to build personality into stylish maternity outfits! Exact boot finds here + I love these options, too. I paired my boots with a non-maternity turtleneck sweater dress and fedora hat.
Style Hack #3: Bring In A Little Edge
One of my favorite ways to approach an outfit is to keep in mind juxtaposition, which often for me means adding in a little edge if you have something on the sweeter side. A tulle skirt is sweet and feminine, and when you pair it with something like studded combat booties, it makes for a really interesting and eye-appealing maternity outfit!
Nothing is maternity in this outfit! The skirt is worn over the bump, and the sweater is tucked into my bra as opposed to the top of the skirt. This keeps the look from appearing chunky.
Style Hack #4: Think Outside The Box
Have a long trench that could double as a dress? DO IT. Think outside the box with your clothing — what is meant for one thing, that you can turn into something else? Another example of this is wearing a cardigan the same way.
Here, I paired a long tie-sleeve trench – worn buttoned up – with my maternity jersey turtleneck underneath. You could also easily wear this look with the trench worn open and having leggings or jeans on the bottom!
Style Hack #5: Put A Chic Blazer On It
There’s not much that a chic blazer doesn’t elevate. This one is from Sezane and I honestly can’t get enough of its tuxedo-inspired style. It’s a closet staple that you can wear year-round, and that particularly for a maternity outfit, helps to add a level of sophistication.
Here, I layered my Sezane blazer over a non-maternity dress. Exact dress is no longer available, but this option is similar and this + this + this are adorable! For boots, I wore my Sam Edelman knee-high boots, which I’ve had for years and LOVE.
Style Hack #6: Leverage A Black Bralette
Our bodies change so much during pregnancy, and one of those changes is of course that our ladies get more pronounced! Why not build in a bit of that edge I noted earlier and embrace it?! Adding a black bralette — or heck, any colored bralette – under a button up is a great way to do this. A bralette adds a little lace, which builds in a romantic effect, and is also pleasantly unexpected while not being too WHOA.
Admittedly, this one is a bit more out there and takes a lot of confidence to wear. But, look, our bodies are making a human being, and why not be PROUD of it?!
In this outfit, I paired my bralette with black maternity leggings with a white button up maternity shirt and leopard booties.
Style Hack #7: Black on Black
There’s that bralette and Sezane blazer again! I added these for pops of personality – as well as the purple maternity t-shirt under the blazer – but when in doubt, black on black is a chic, timeless way to dress, whether you’re looking for stylish maternity outfits or have zero bump at all! The point is that this look is super easy to mix-and-match, and regardless of what you pair it with, the black on black combination as a base will have you looking fabulous.
Style Hack #8: Incorporate Joggers
Joggers are very on trend right now, and I love how many ways you can wear them! You may think joggers as just for, well, running around…but think again! They’re a stylish and comfortable option when worn with anything from heels to sneakers, and best of all, they’re so comfortable!
Here, I paired my non-maternity Cloth + Stone joggers with Everlane heels and my maternity turtleneck for a simple yet pulled together look. Other joggers I own and love are these camo ones, which you can see worn here, and I absolutely love!
