St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner!
With a bit of Irish in my blood, I love to celebrate this holiday. When we lived in Chicago, St Patty’s meant visits to the famous green river and lots of Guiness, but since moving back to Detroit, we keep it fairly low key with a Shamrock Shake or two.
Of course, it’s always fun to tap into the imagination of kids during holidays — there’s lots of talk of leprechauns, rainbows, and 4 leaf clovers in our home! (Fun fact: A legend of St. Patrick was that he used the 3 leaves on a shamrock, the native Irish clover, to explain the Holy Trinity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. So even though we look for a 4 leaf clover as “good luck,” I always tell my kids that the typical 3-leaf clovers are even more special!) Regardless of if you go all out celebrating the luck o’ the Irish, or if you’re more low key, I think we can all agree that it’s fun to get into the spirit. Usually that means dressing the part, which for St. Patrick’s Day means all things green!
The only thing is…green can sometimes be tricky to style! Too much can look like a lot, no? I thought it’d be fun to put together some tips for styling the color, because even after St. Partick’s Day has past, green is such a great staple for the upcoming spring season. Happy styling!
6 Stylish Ways To Wear Green
In the spirit of the season, below are 6 stylish ways to wear green. I sometimes find the color can be tough to know how to style, and these looks all are serving up the perfect amount of inspiration for me right now!
Style Tip #1: Layer In Leopard
From belts or shoes to skirts, pairing leopard and green is a great combination because the pattern is a fool-proof way to give really any hue an added pop of personality. Don’t be afraid to add on other patterns or colors to the mix, too!
Style Tip #2: Incorporate It With Florals
Not a gal who goes all out with green? It’s okay! Many floral patterns have it incorporated within the pattern, so why not leverage that as the route for tying green into your outfit? Wear the floral pattern on its own or paired with others; I love the look of mixing prints right now. A pro trick there is to make sure there’s one consistent color throughout (like green!)

Style Tip #3: Pair It With Other Colors
Perhaps my favorite way to wear the color green is to go bold with it! Great color palettes to try include emerald green + turquoise, peach + mint green, green + pink, and green + red. Any of these color combinations will feel fresh and fun.
This was the route I went when styling my bright green YSL skirt suit, pictured at the beginning of this post. I could have worn simple, nude or black heels…but where’s the fun in that?! Pairing the suit with red heels brought just the right amount of pizzaz.
Style Tip #4: Go All In
Okay, is this not just gorgeous?! I love the beautiful and more subtle sage or olive green color paired with the sequin statement skirt. If you’ve got a festive gathering to attend, I’d definitely embrace this route, because why not?! It’s just plain fun.
Don’t forget to pair your green-on-green with even more green. Accessories can help to bring this look from good to great!

Style Tip #5: Have It Be Your “One Thing”
Stuck on styling? Go the opposite of bold color-blocking and pair green with neutrals, like black pants or jeans. It’s a more simple approach, but one that will always work. Plus, one should never underestimate the power of one pop of color within an otherwise neutral outfit!
In the above looks, a green jacket was my “one thing” with an all black outfit, and a green + blue plaid shirt my “one thing” with silk black trousers. This is a great route to go when styling green year-round; because no matter the shade of green, it always works.
Style Tip #6: Green Prints + Stripes
Particularly when green is found in a design such as palm print, I adore the look paired with black and white stripes! Stripes are perfect because they’re like a neutral, but a bit more style-forward especially when mixing with a bold print. Give it a try!
What other ways do you like wearing green? Are you doing anything fun to celebrate the luck o’ the Irish this year?
PS – My own palm print tie in, and how I styled a green dress with a fedora a few years back.
