Is there anything more chic than wearing black on black? Whenever I wear the combination I feel so modern and stylish. Best, accessories can make the look totally different from one day to the next, which is hugely important since I’m being frugal and currently only have two pairs of maternity pants. {Do I rotate? Yes. Don’t lie, you do it, too.}
That said, I do have a few self-made rules that I follow when wearing the combination. Here’s how I take the look, which can lack personality if done wrong, and make it my own.
Rule #1: Add Pops of Color – Your pop of color can be as simple as some red lipstick, or you could continue the zest with a colorful blazer. Either way, a little color helps to to break up the monotone nature of the look. Plus, it adds a little charm, which of course we can all agree to.
Rule #2: Vary the Textures and Fabrics – Hence my chosen additions of the mesh polka dot shirt & suede boots. To wear all of one color is fine and well, but particularly when it’s too matchy-matchy, it’s yawn-worthy. A little variation of textures takes the look from potentially drab to fab.
Rule #3: Accessorize – Grab a scarf, thrown on some interesting earrings, and don’t forget your arm candy. Accessories help to take this look and truly make it complete. Without them, it may look like you just didn’t know what to wear, since it’s an easy fall back for anyone. With them, and worn with great taste, it looks voila!
Do you have other rules that you follow when wearing black on black? Do share!
Also, for those interested in shopping the post, note that the only maternity item I wore in these images were these pants. Looking for non-maternity options? These, these and these are too cute! The scarf I wore is a new favorite on rotation because it’s not only versatile but perfect for winter-to-spring transition. And while the blazer is past season, I’ve found some amazing options for you here, here & here!
A huge thanks to Kelly In The City for her amazing photography! xo

aww look at that adorable bump 🙂 !!! love this outfit emily! xo jillian
Great tips! I also note how the various blacks mesh. (Sometimes one has been washed more than another, or one item is a little lighter than the other, etc.) Unless the top is a completely different texture, I always make sure that my top is darker than my bottom! I feel like it looks silly if I’m going for black on black and my pants are nice and crisp but my top is a little older and pulling that green-black if that makes sense.
Such a great suggestion!

So happy to finally see a bit more of that cute bump!
Love this look! I actually wore an outfit just like this: all black with a powder blue sweater. It’s one of my go-to looks when I seriously can’t find anything to wear.
