Last week, I did the the big closet swap.
Every person who lives in a place that dips to cooler temperatures in the fall and winter months knows it well. Around this time, when humidity fades away and the daily weather predicts “60”, we store away our warm-weather clothing and transition our closets to one that’s more fitting for falling leaves and snow. But this year, I did something a little different.
Sure, there were plenty of items that I packed away for Spring 2022. But, there was a lot from my warm-weather wardrobe that I actually kept in my closet! Why? With some quick pairing, I figured I can easily give some of my favorite dresses added longevity.
The secret? It’s all about layers.
Below, I’ve shared three super easy ways to wear summer dresses in fall. Below each example, I’ve also provided links to great transition items, if you’re on the hunt!
3 Easy Ways to Wear Summer Dresses In Fall
1. Throw On A Sweater
Seems simple, right? It is! But how often do we forget that simply throwing on a sweater can do wonders?
A tip for wearing this look is to define your waistline. Here, I tied my Sezane Gaspard Jumper at the smallest part of my waist, which helps to give some shape. Without waist definition, this look can easily look a bit dowdy, so be sure to define it! A belt could also work for this purpose.

2. Layer With A Turtleneck
Ah, the turtleneck. How could we do cold weather without one?! It’s classic, warm, and works so many ways. Mine is the J.Crew Perfect-Fit Turtleneck, which I can attest really is a perfect fit. I have it in three colors!
A tip for wearing this look is to pair a neutral-color turtleneck with your dress. Especially if you’re wearing a dress with a pattern! You certainly can make pattern-on-pattern work, don’t get me wrong, but focusing on neutrals helps the dress to shine and is generally easier to mix and match.

3. When In Doubt, Add A Trench Coat
There’s really nothing more *fall* than the classic trench coat. Pictured here is a Rachel Roy one that I purchased a few years back, and I’ve worn it so many ways. Paired with dresses, jeans, while pregnant, and even as a dress on its own! I’m currently saving for the Scott Trench from Sezane — Absolutely adore this one!
A tip for wearing this look is to not overthink it! Honestly, a trench just works. Always! Throw it on, and go. If you prefer to wear it indoors, simply tie the waistband in the back.
